You do you Boo and we will follow! Too many people consume their lives with social media and they forget what it’s actually like to live! I have never been a daily or hourly FB person and fail miserably at social media. I refer to it as the instasnapcchatgram to my kids. Too much lost time. Young people do not know how to communicate or enjoy life because their eyes are in their phones and computers non stop. Love you Big Guy!
You’re right Drew. Not that you need us to tell you. My grown adult children are pretty much off social media (except Be Real?) i mainly go on Insta but less and less because real recovery happens in real life like you say. The subscription idea is actually great. I subscribe to an anxiety website (Canadian) that has been immensely helpful for my recovery. It was the only site that explained what actually was wrong with me. I also see a therapist through their service. An excellent therapist that is well-acquainted with anxiety specifically. It is well worth the affordable subscription price and the therapy is comparatively affordable as well.
So I think you are on the right track. And honestly social media is the worst but second and third would be practitioners who either don’t understand anxiety or think medication alone can fix it.
I agree that social media is toxic, and I fully support your move to set up something independent that has a few. Your wisdom and tireless effort is worth more than I’m sure you will change.
A few weeks ago I deleted my Twitter account as well as my Instagram account. I have family and friends on Facebook but the only reason I haven’t deleted my account is because of The Anxious Truth. If a subscription is needed to move away from these environments that don’t give two shits about me as a human, then I’m all in!
I'm a little confused. Are you saying your FB group is not as you'd like it to be? I don't use Instagram.
Are you forced by meta/FB to do other than you wish out there? What would be different about this new platform you're thinking about than the FB site? I have no problem supporting it monetarily, am on board. Just trying to figure out what you want it to do that the FB group doesn't do. I find that group to be non-argumentative and certainly would not describe your approach as "soothing" and placating. Thanks for any feedback on this.
Drew, please consider building an app and charging for it. I know you would set a fair price. Also, that is a most likely future for reaching a larger community. There a few out there now; however, none with messaging as thorough and as direct as yours. The community would support it and would allow you out of the algorithm disfunction. Also, as the message matures it is much easier to update an approach. So much potential in an app environment. Btw - thanks for all you do for this community.
Fully support your idea. I understand how difficult it is for you to decide but ultimately I believe it to be the best path. You’ve helped me in the past and I will happily continue to follow along.
When I joined years ago I think there was only 500 in the group 😊
I admire your dedication for helping people. You’re doing great stuff!!!
That’s a tough decision. Social media steals so much energy. You’ve done this thing based on your instincts so far and helped countless people. I would stand in your hall.
I’ve been long contemplating get off of the Social Media roller coaster. The only one I use is Instagram. Oddly it is my millennial children who have suggested I stop. My daughters all opted out of all the drama. Preaching to me about what an unhealthy place it can be. It can shatter one’s own confidence to be bombarded with others opinions constantly. I totally get where you’re coming from too. I will gladly follow along. I too was lost for quite a long time doing the “death scroll” as you say, endlessly seeking reassurance from strangers and only finding hollow well wishes and cheers I didn’t earn and that did nothing to help me. People feeding into my fear and helping me stay stuck there. Then I found The Anxious Truth and my faith that someone really wanted to help was restored. I’ll gladly follow along.
My ultimate goal is for you to stop following me because you don’t need me any more. That is 180 degrees in opposition to the goal of any social platform where my job (for the platform) is to be really “sticky” and keep you engaged and scrolling as much as I can and for as long as I can. The most useful content in anxiety recovery is difficult content, which means I (and people like me) spend huge amounts of time trying to dance for Instagram in an attempt to get our helpful content even seen. So I make funny reels half the time and still try to make the educational because everything else gets buried so the production effort is wasted. You (the audience) has no say in this unless you all decide to turn on notifications for all my content, immediately run and like it just because, and share it copiously with other people. Funny dog videos we share with our friends. Lessons about intentionally doing hard things to recover from panic disorder ... not so much. 😉
I live in Australia, and I currently pay $250 per fortnight to see my psychologist (standard rate here in Aus) I’ve seen psychologists for almost a year now so roughly $6,000. OUCH
Ive purchased 2 of your books roughly $45 and I read your free Instagram and Substack.
Let me tell you - I have learnt 100x times more from your books and free resources than I have in well over a year at psychologists.
All my growth and all my progress has stemmed from your resources.
I would happily pay for your subscription. I think the information you provide is well worth the investment and it’s a DAMN lot cheaper than $250 a fortnight. And to be honest I think you deserve it.
Also as a side note, the only reason I keep Instagram is for the anxious truth and anxiety josh - so it would be nice to finally get to delete the app hahaha if you could just persuade josh to jump ship with you.
Very happy to subcribe. Your work is invaluable and has helped me after what seems a lifetime of anxiety. Thank you so much, Denise.

I still am don’t understand what the platform gets out of my following you or not. How does my following you benefit them? Who gets paid for what?

Great post Drew. The online trap is real and it’s maddening. You do great work!

Hi Drew. I'm sure lots of your followers would not object to paying a monthly or annual fee for you to run an independent site. Why not test us out ?

Need to also say I’m also recovered and I still find it helpful sometimes to pop in. Great mental health advocates/admins 😊

Awwwww thank you Laura. :-)

I wish I knew how these platforms work. I don’t understand the problem. How can your audience make it work in your favor?

Wow. Thank you Kodie. I’m happy I’ve been able to help. 🙂
