This was an excellent write up. Super helpful and informative. Provides great context for the things I have been working on. Also very helpful when evaluating resources.

My old therapist I think was trying to use ACT with me, but she never brought up exposure therapy. It was Brainspotting( similar to EMDR), and ACT...and often steering away from sensations of overwhelm while doing the brainspotting. It was a confused jumble that never worked and I spent a year with her..and spent a few thousand dollars😪

Very interesting , I hadn’t realised the variations abd development and I’ve realised that nhs (in England )therapy only offers cbt from the 60s snd 70s it seems. This is perhaps why it’s not worked for me and why I struggle.

Love the clarification, Drew.

Spent 10+ years with a first wave CBT therapist and only got so far. For the past year, I've been working one-on-one with one of the pioneers of ACT, and I am gaining much benefit from the more holistic approach and the emphasis on acceptance. I'm very glad I made the switch!

So interesting! I’m working with a very young therapist ( very well trained in CBT)

And yeees she’s going with the 3.0 wave!

Thank you Drew for sharing this information, so useful 🙏🏻❤️😘

Indeed not boring at all - hugely educational and informative! As ever explained and articulated in a simple, easy to understand way using relatable terms and examples… which I’m sure will help the many of us who are navigating the world of anxiety, disorders, mental health on top of general stress in life. As you say, whether it’s those who are already in (or trying out) therapy or those who are potentially paving the way for the ‘right’ therapy by educating oneself first (if nothing else to ensure months or years aren’t spent with false expectations dashed & hard-earned ££ wasted) explanations like this help enormously to create an accurate, informed starting point (or re-baseline for anyone who hasn’t seen success in their therapy as yet). And this is only CBT, god only knows you’re going to be a walking encyclopaedia once your studies are completed! Thank you 👍🏼

Drew! When comes the day you hang your shingle out, I guarantee there will be a mile long line of anxious folks hoping for an appointment with you! Good stuff, 3.0!

Thanks Drew. I have had anxiety issues for a long time and I think I have experienced all 3 of these CBT . I have to say I didn't find the first wave very helpful because they always tried to make you think of what you were thinking when most of the time I wasn't thinking anything. I think that only now our NHS psychologists are using the 2nd wave and again it didn't seem to resonate with me. This new third wave sounds like it would be more beneficial to me, if only I could find such a therapist.

I agree that nhs seems to only use 2nd wave I’d say even 1st wave where I’m based

Such a great explanation. I still remember the first CBT (because I am old) and using that STOP! technique. P.S, it didn't work ;-)
